The FailSafe Insulation Monitors are intended for use in ships and are designed to meet the environment requirements.
Moisture condensing from the air combined with contamination deposited on insulation and micro cracks, as starting and stopping machines causes the degradation of insulation properties.
FailSafe Insulation Monitors are designed to provide safe monitoring of electrical insulation integrity in the marine environment. They may be installed in any area of the vessel where electrical machinery may sit idle but must be effective on demand, e.g. the lower platform, deck machinery, standby generators. Monitors are effective in eliminating grounds on the ship's electrical system before they occur, and give early warning of insulation degradation. This allows preventive maintenance to be scheduled when convenient, thus eliminating failure and need for emergency treatment.
The seriousness of situation can be found by using different alarm settings provided in each unit to determine the speed of insulation deterioration.
Two kinds of monitors exist:
Such motors, which are in intermittent service are subject to thermal stresses generated by the repeated starting and stopping of the machines, that causes micro cracking of the insulation. They are also useful to monitor continuously running machines during their annual shutdown, giving early warning of the moisture induced degradation of the insulation. Since most grounds occur when wet motors are started - FailSafe monitors detect wet motors and prevent starting.
Early warning of insulation degradation in energized system allows preventing shutting it down before that occurs. Grounding of powered system can short out control elements, often with catastrophic results. This defect can be eliminated and system operation can be assured at all times by installing a FailSafe monitor. This will helps to choose correct monitor for your application:
To monitor an electric motor:
Motor up to 600V AC/DC
Motor with VFD or SSD up to 600V AC/DC
Motor, Generator up to 1,000V AC or 1,200V DC
3 phase Motor up to 13.800V AC
To monitor an energized power system:
Single phase AC
3 phase AC
DC ungrounded system
